- QUESTION: I am still a rather young man, just past thirty, but unfortunately
- I look years older than my age. I have met a wonderful woman who I care about
- very much, and she has suggested that I have a hair transplant operation now.
- I am more than a bit reluctant, and would like to know if there is any way of
- determining if the operation will result in the look I am seeking to have. I
- am sure that others have faced this problem, so perhaps you can offer all of
- us your advice.

- QUESTION: While nothing is ever guaranteed, there have been many new
- developments in the techniques of hair transplants that allow for an
- optimistic outlook. No longer do hair transplant surgeons seek to cover every
- square inch of bare skin, but now use the visual qualities of the hair,
- innovative hair styles and different hair transplant designs to achieve the
- effect you are seeking. Of course your own situation has a great deal to do
- with the outcome. Your severity of baldness and the location of the balding
- areas is important. Receding hairlines, a bald vertex or both can be dealt
- with most easily. Other factors that should be considered are your hair
- color, the amount of curl in your hair (curly hair covers the balding area
- better than straight hair), and the texture of your hair. Fine hair, though
- it covers a bit less, is easier to manage, and tends to look more natural.
- Thick hair may cover well, but its styling is more limited and difficult as
- it tends to grow at the same angle it was planted in the scalp. If your
- present hair is dense, it offers more available hair from which to obtain
- donor tufts to transplant.
- In making your decision, you should obtain the counsel of a hair
- transplant surgeon with proper education and experience. His (or her) advice
- should be considered most thoughtfully, for your best advice will come from
- that source. You can get more information about hair transplant surgery by
- calling the consumer hotline of the American Society for Dermatological
- Surgery 1-800-441-2737 during weekday business hours (CST).
